Summary

For generations of enthralled readers, the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby has come to embody all the glamour and decadence of the Roaring Twenties。

To F。 Scott Fitzgerald's bemused narrator, Nick Carraway, Gatsby appears to have emerged out of nowhere, evading questions about his murky past and throwing dazzling parties at his luxurious mansion。 Nick finds something both appalling and appealing in the intensity of his new neighbor's ambition, and his fascination grows when he discovers that Gatsby is obsessed by a long-lost love, Daisy Buchanan。

But Daisy and her wealthy husband are cynical and careless people, and as Gatsby's dream collides with reality, Nick is witness to the violence and tragedy that result。 The Great Gatsby's remarkable staying power is owed to the lyrical freshness of its storytelling and to the way it illuminates the hollow core of the glittering American dream。

With a new introduction by John Grisham。

I don’t remember reading this in high school, but if I did, I must not have appreciated it enough to remember it。 I do now。 A fine read。

Par neizsapņotām jūtām, bākām, kas var būt spēcīgākie navigācijas un mērķtiecības dzinuļi, reizēm aprijot spēcīgākās personības。 Jau sen pagājušo jūtu fantomi, uz tiem stutēta visa pasaule, cerībā piepildīt iekšējās sapņu pilis, beigās noved pie traģēdijas。 Fantāzija saduras ar realitāti, kur pēkšņi viss izkropļojas- bāka ir sarūsējusi un tās ugunij nemaz nav vajadzīgs centīgais ceļotājs, kuru pašu nevadāmi samaļ krasta klints。

This classic, published in the year 1925 has aged well。 It makes you realise that appearances are deceiving, that we are often quick to judge a person about whom we know nothing about。 I think the story would resonate well with people our age。 This book is filled with so many quotable lines that I had difficulty choosing a single one。

Very interesting/entertaining

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 What a beautiful piece of literature。 Last time I read this book was in high school and I had to rush it。 Reading it over a decade later, I was finally able to appreciate the words。 I’ll always feel bad for Gatsby。 While he wasn’t an honorable man, it still makes me sad how Daisy played with his emotions in the end。 All these people just used him for their own convenience and at the end of the day, no one was there for him at all。

Xander

Great satire and prose, but quite tiresome and lackluster。

The Great Gatsby is in my opinion F。 Scott Fitzgerald’s finest work, the book is classic and an easy read as well。 the novel tells the tragic story of Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, and his pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, a wealthy young woman whom he loved in his youth。 The story is told from the young yale graduate Nick’s POV, I would say he’s not really entirely involved in the story, instead, he’s more of a watcher。 The book is set in the Jazz Age(1920s) in New York, and Fitzgerald did an a The Great Gatsby is in my opinion F。 Scott Fitzgerald’s finest work, the book is classic and an easy read as well。 the novel tells the tragic story of Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, and his pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, a wealthy young woman whom he loved in his youth。 The story is told from the young yale graduate Nick’s POV, I would say he’s not really entirely involved in the story, instead, he’s more of a watcher。 The book is set in the Jazz Age(1920s) in New York, and Fitzgerald did an amazing job reflecting the lives that are corrupted by greed and turn out incredibly sad and unfulfilled。 Jay Gatsby is one of the most powerful characters in American literature, he’s really nothing more than a man just desperate for love。 The book does an amazing job of showing the ugly side of society。 The rich powerful upper-class citizens, treating other people like playthings, manipulating them with wealth, all demonstrate the nasty traits in history。 Though Gatsby is incredibly rich and all that, there’s still this void, this empty hole in him, something that money could not fill, and that was love。 The green light across from Gatsby’s mansion symbolizes his hopes and dreams for the future associating with the girl he loves Daisy Buchanan。 It’s his lighthouse, he reaches toward it in the darkness as a guiding light to lead him to his goal, but in the end, we find out that Daisy is no different from the other upper-class rich people。 I think this story was very deep and fascinating, it is neat and well crafted, and gives a damning insightful view of nouveau riche in the 1920s。 Looking forward to reading more books by F。 Scott Fitzgerald。 。。。more

come to appreciate this for what it is, privileged rich adults scapegoating everything on their poor counterparts。 second time around I hated hated Nick more, Gatsby less, and Tom the same amount。 Daisy and Jordan are the deep and most interesting characters, with the best dialogues。 Aside from killing a woman (purposely or mistakenly) I can't fault Daisy for playing two men who've wasted her life, lied to her and toyed with her emotions for their own selfish greed。 As an adult, I would very muc come to appreciate this for what it is, privileged rich adults scapegoating everything on their poor counterparts。 second time around I hated hated Nick more, Gatsby less, and Tom the same amount。 Daisy and Jordan are the deep and most interesting characters, with the best dialogues。 Aside from killing a woman (purposely or mistakenly) I can't fault Daisy for playing two men who've wasted her life, lied to her and toyed with her emotions for their own selfish greed。 As an adult, I would very much like to experience their fast lifestyle for a month, or be a fly on the wall。 Fly on the wall may be a dash safer。 still a weird book to teach in high school。 probably not the best idea to show this mentality and lifestyle to a bunch of teenagers who just got their driver's license and are dipping their toes into the world of alcohol。 。。。more
